Wedge Flow Measuring Device
On the basis of differential pressure, wedge flow meters measure the flow rate of liquid, gas, and steam. By using this new development, flow pressure can be quantified as well as fluid flow rate quantified. This device is particularly useful when it comes to hard-to-measure line fluids such as liquid, steam, and gas. In addition to measuring clean liquid flow, the wedge flow meter also measures highly viscous liquid flow precisely.
The meter consists of a cylindrical pipe, which is also referred to as a measuring pipe or body, with pressure taps on one side and a wedge restriction on the other. A V-shaped constriction is also built into the measuring pipe, which ensures efficient flow measurement.
Differential pressure is used to operate a wedge flow meter. This principle specifies that fluid flowing through the pressure taps is of high pressure or of high dynamic pressure, whereas fluid flowing behind the wedge restriction is of low pressure or low dynamic pressure. Differential pressure is the difference between both pressures that gives fluid flow value.
In accordance with detailed knowledge, the flow meter’s body has a V-shaped constriction which impedes fluid flow, increasing fluid velocity. As a result of this restriction, the kinetic energy of the flowing fluid changes. Now, according to the energy principle, there will be a difference between the potential energy at the wedge and pressure tap areas, resulting in differential pressure.
